PINK SHIRT DAY 2012

Dear Weeb,

Today was Pink Shirt Day / Anti-Bullying Day. You, me and Daddy all wore pink shirts to celebrate! Bullying stops here! Some schools in Canada make a big deal out of Pink Shirt Day, but unfortunately, your school didn't seem to do anything. It may be because of the impending Teachers' Strike or maybe just because your school just doesn't do those kinds of things. I don't remember you doing anything last year either. Oh well, it won't stop us!

Once upon a time, in Nova Scotia, a boy wore a pink shirt to school and he was teased and bullied for it. People got together and wore pink shirts to support him. Canada has been celebrating Pink Shirt Day since 2009, I believe.

Nobody has the right to bully you! And you don't have the right to bully anyone, either! Here's hoping it's never going to be a big issue for you.

MOLECULES

Dear Weeb,

Tonight you asked me what Coke was made of. I answered, "Sugar." You said, "So Coke is made of brown molecules?"

Um... I'm not quite sure how you got THAT from my answer of 'sugar', but okay, sure. Coke is made up of brown molecules. And sugar.

Now here's a picture of you and your Cousin J from last weekend. I was playing in Photoshop and made your eyes a creepy blue. It makes you look like you've been into the spice (you'll have to read Dune to get that) (or see the movie) (I couldn't get into the book) (though your dad loves Dune).

Wanna see what it would look like if your eyes were red?

Creepy, eh? Don't have red eyes. It freaks everyone out. And I should have probably left your pupils black. Next time.

WHO CAN RESIST A BIG PUDDLE?

Dear Weeb,

You'll likely forget this, but I'm a pretty cool mom, so if you want to go splashing about in huge puddles, I say go for it! Do you see all the snow geese in the grass? There were hundreds of them!
You were pretty happy splashing around in your pink boots! Doesn't get much better than this!

BLEEDING AND VEGETARIANISM

Dear Weeb,

Just a few notes on things you've talked about in the past couple of days.

Tonight, as you were brushing your teeth, you explained to Daddy that you believe cats have green blood. I'm not sure how this came up, exactly, though earlier today you were freaking out (and I'm talking downright hysterical) about a scratch on your finger and how you thought you needed a bandage because it was going to 'drip blood' all over your bed tonight. The fact that it was not dripping blood at the time was not helpful in calming you down over the matter. We talked again about logic and how if your finger wasn't dripping with blood now, it wasn't likely to start dripping blood later and that your body was doing its job of healing itself as it had already started scabbing over. I appeased you with a little, round bandage (which fell off about an hour later) and you were happy again.

Last night you announced that we shouldn't eat meat anymore. "Those poor cows!" you said. You were not quite clear on what meat was, aside from 'cow'. I explained that there are cows mostly for milk because we like milk and milk is used to make lots of other things like yogurt and cheese. I explained that once the cow was very old and it was time to say goodbye, THAT was when they got turned into 'meat'. Yes, I lied. There's stuff you just don't need to know yet. You wanted to know if people got very, very hungry, would they eat another person, because, "WE'RE meat, ya know!" I told you that most creatures do not eat their own species. You asked me what a species was. I never realised it would be so difficult to explain the world to a curious kid. Between not exactly knowing answers, not knowing exactly how to answer questions and trying not to laugh, parenthood has been quite an experience! You announced, "I feel like I'm a vegetarian." Okay. I asked if you knew what that meant and you said you didn't and asked what vegetarians ate. Somehow, and I don't quite remember how, the topic changed and didn't come up again, so I let it go.

You are a truly amazing kid. I'm so lucky I get to be your mum. I love you, Stinker.

Dear Weeb,

I've been doing some silly stuff with Photoshop and you wanted me to work on a couple of pictures of you so they looked like posters.

It's true.

ROCK TUMBLERS AND FIJIT FRIENDS

Dear Weeb,

We finally opened the Rock Tumbler that Daddy and I bought for you, for Christmas. The directions noted that it would take about three weeks to complete a set of rocks. That's THREE WEEKS of continuous tumbling. We decided to hang on to the rock tumbler for a few more years and trade you for something else.

So Daddy took you to the toy store. In the parking lot, you found a penny on the ground. Daddy said it must be your lucky penny.

In the first store, you couldn't find what you wanted. Not a surprise since the stores have been sold out of Fijit Friends since well before Christmas. You went to a second store and they actually had one! It was blue, not your first choice, but you were delighted.

Merry Christmas in February, Weeb!

MY BEAUTIFUL GIRL

Dear Weeb,

Thank you for all your patience in posing for me while I learn how to use my camera.

You are such a pretty girl and have such a wonderful, sweet personality. You are beautiful on the inside and the outside. You don't like people being mad at you or mad at each other. You're funny and have nailed sarcasm. But what amazes me most is the way you see the world and your profound sweetness. You are not quite at an age where you really realise that you are not the center of the universe, but you certainly are the center of mine. I love you, my beautiful girl.

SUNSETS, WEEB, AND THE MOON

Dear Weeb,

After a couple of foggy days, the fog lifted and we got this awesome shot of you, silhouetted by the sunset.

The following night we went out and had missed the sunset, but the sky was such a beautiful blue, we couldn't resist taking some pictures. Here you are 'holding Sirius in your hands'.

That same night, we heard that the moon was full after we got in from taking the silhouette shot, so we rushed back outside a few times to try and get a picture of it. You were very patient as I fiddled with my camera and we were singing little songs about moons that we were mostly making up. It was a very fun evening with you!

BELLYBUTTON PASTA

Dear Weeb,

You've been talking about 'bellybutton pasta' for several days now. You explained that your teacher had some at a restaurant and the class thought it was really funny. You later explained that she'd brought some into class, in a pot, and everyone got to try. You didn't get to try though, as she hadn't cleared it with me first (or she knew it was not nut safe).

I searched Google for 'Bellybutton Pasta' today. Ah, it's tortellini! So I show you, "Look Weeb, your bellybutton pasta is called tortellini!"

"I know."

You know.

"Well why didn't you tell me that when we were having our bellybutton pasta battle in the grocery store, yesterday and I told you I had no idea what kind of pasta you were talking about?"

"I dunno."

"You'd like it, I think. It's just pasta stuffed with cheese or meat."

You made a face like I'd just told you the most amazing thing EVER. "I have to have some TODAY!"

"We could probably do that," I say.

"Wait, wait, no, I don't want any."

Of course you don't.

PUDDING FACE

Dear Weeb,

I was trying to get a pretty shot of you but every time my camera would focus, you'd rush up closer and then giggle your head off. So I snapped a picture anyways. Ha to you!

Still trying to get a pretty picture of you, but by this point, you were covered in chocolate pudding. Daddy is behind you - he must have been talking to Grandma.

FOGGY DAYS AND GRANDPARENTS

Dear Weeb,

We wanted to try and get some sunset silhouette shots, so we went to Steveston to try and get some as the sun was setting. Unfortunately it was very foggy. This picture is Grandma, you and Grandpa. I think it's one of my all time favorite photos.

It didn't stop you and Grandpa from having fun on the beach. You both threw things into the water and drew things in the sand. We didn't stay long because it was COLD!
